Air Liquide™ & Your Industry
Freeze Drying
Lyophilization
You need to preserve fragile substances by lyophilization, stabilize these substances and simplify their storage?
Freeze-drying is a soft desiccation method that consists in progressively eliminating water of a previously frozen product.
From the liquid nitrogen source until your end-product, benefit of the expertise of only one partner! Our teams take in charge the installation of the storage, the design and the engineering of the super-isolated piping networks, the maintenance and remote control.
We can also provide freeze-dryers answering your needs.
A wide range of equipment is available: from research/pilot scale unit to production unit and accessories.
Lyophilizator
A lyophilizator is quite a unique piece of equipment because it needs to cool (for freezing and trapping water), create a vacuum (to sublimate water), generate heat and transfer heat energy to the product.
Equipment includes:
- An airtight pressurised vacuum chamber, which must also be able to withstand high temperature variations (from -80°C during lyophilization to +123°C during sterilization)
- A collection vessel (or condenser), which can be placed within the chamber or in a separate vessel. This is where the water vapour turns into ice
- A number of heat/cold exchangers, within which a heat transfer fluid circulates
- A pumping group for lowering the pressure within the chamber
- Cold is generated by the refrigeration groups, i.e. using liquid nitrogen
- A regulation and control box for operating the lyophilizator

Our expertise relies on our partner, Usifroid, 100% Air Liquide subsidiary, the recognized world leader in freeze-drying technology for pharmaceutical and biotech industries.
